I actually feel slightly queasy attempting to write this review. Katherine's story is one of constant disappointment and neglect. She was abused by those who should have been protecting her. Her story is quite unknown, I certainly had never heard of this poor woman, or the horrors she faced in my country. There are many reasons for this; one being that the final proceedings were happening during some of the worst bushfires this nation has faced; a man-made destruction known as Black Saturday. The other reason was that due to a "complex legal web" which aims to shield and protect Katherine and her sons from public eye. This is necessary because Katherine's sons are her fathers children.
When Katherine was a young girl her father, who had been emotionally and physically abusing his family for years reached an unimaginable low and began to sexually abuse her. Katherine and her siblings were placed in and out of the system and she pleaded with social workers and other adults to help her. But the system too abused her, because they refused to listen, refused to believe her, refused to do anything to stop what was happening. This abuse spanned over nearly three decades of Katherine's life, and the scars she has from the ordeal are far deeper than any skin abrasion. It breaks my heart telling her story, but the fact that she, this incredibly courageous and fierce woman was able to face it all only makes me want to spread her word even more. Because this book comes with a message, and I truly believe that it is one that all people should take be constantly aware of...
