The Maze Runner
I first heard of The Maze Runner when I went to see it in the cinema with my friend Kerrod. I was pleasantly surprised (after being dismally dissapointed from Divergent) and knew that I would be reading the series. And so here we are, nearly a year later and after having the series on hold at the library for two months, they finally arrived and I cleared a space on my TBR for them. I am pretty happy with the outcome too. :)
The Maze Runner is set in a, you guessed it, maze. Greenie Thomas is sent into the world of Gladers, Grievers and entrapment. Without their memories, the boys have refused to give up hope that there is a way out of the maze. But as things begin to change in the Glade, they begin to realise that maybe they were wrong after all... TMR was a really engaging YA dytopian tale. I feel like it's been a while since I've read one that gave me a real sense of YAness (if that's a word), plus the awesomeness of a boy-told tale. I am now so looking forward to the rest of the books, where I will have no clue what is coming next. Rate: 8/10 Pages: 371 Format: Paperback Genre: YA Dystopian Acquired from: The Mobile Library |
The Scorch Trials
Oh
boy was I right about liking this book even more than the first! I had
no idea what was going on or what would happen and I loved it!! This is
such an adrenalinating novel!!!
It follows the boys after their escape from the maze into an even larger test- the scorch trials. Thomas' memories are gone, as is Teresa. He must cross the desert with his friends in order to get the cure for the plague that has destroyed the nation, the Flare. But are they really infected? Or is it too just another test? I can't really say much more because I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't read the series. But wow! The power went out yesterday morning and I just devoured this book because hey, no power means no assignment! I am already nearly half way in book three and ohhhhh boyyyy!! :D Rate: 8.5/10 Pages: 359 Format: Paperback Genre: YA Dystopian Acquired from: The Mobile Library |
The Death Cure
Book three did not disappoint!!
Because this is the last book in the trilogy, it is really hard to review without spoiling it. So as I often do, I will discuss what I loved and didn't love about it. I loved: The language! All throughout this series the boys had their own vernacular and jargon, which is super realistic considering they were practically forced to create their own society. I have found myself using it in my every day life and I just love when books affect you so much that they spill into real life. I didn't love: Okay, I can genuinely not think of anything... Hmm, actually maybe that we never found out Thomas' real name. That irked me a tad. I kind of want to read The Maze Runner again now... The Kill Order
Upon reading the blurb and realising that TKO followed characters unrelated to the original series, I was disappointed. However, I was excited to learn more about the apocalypse and the development of WICKED. But I was a little underwhelmed. Following five characters; Mark, Trina, Alec, Lana and Deedee, the book was set as the Flare virus is released. It was quite fast paced, but I found that they didn't really get anywhere. I found Mark to be quite annoying in the first three quarters of the book as he made such childish and stupid decisions. He did get better and I can see that Dashner was trying to show his transition, but I think he needed to be smarter considering he already had survived the sun flares. I didn't really feel the bond between Mark and Trina, in fact the relationship between all the characters was a little off. However, I really did enjoy the flashbacks to the actual apocalypse, quite a great deal more than what was happening in the main story. I think that Dashner had a chance to really uncover some more truths, but he just didn't. I read somewhere that he is writing another prequel, so maybe that is why, creating suspense for the next book. I was really annoyed that it didn't confirm that Teresa was Deedee either, I know he did in some editions, but why didn't he include them in all. I LOVED THE ENDING!! I thought that Dashner absolutely crushed it!! ;) Rate: 7.5/10 Pages: 331 pages Format: Paperback Genre: YA Dystopian Acquired from: The Mobile Library |
