Briar Rose
I ran out of books to read (thanks to limited space at college), so I made a little trip to the library on Friday after picking my car up from the mechanic. This one had quite the appeal.
Forest. Once Upon. Promise of fantastical fairytales. I was done. Briar Rose is the lass of this tale, her life is pretty bland and uneventful... so she says anyway. Except for the fact that her family and the Quinn's have this really tense feud going on, her best friend is a witch and she has a curse that is supposed to kill her on her 16th Birthday. That comes around and she fights it, escaping into a nightmare of her own making. Here, is the kingdom of Aurora, the sleeping princes.. except, unlike in the nice tale, there is an evil regent that likes to kill people and mutilate them with her magic silver. Briar meets Ruric, and they are joined by Reena (the best friend), Joshua (the Quinn) and Pat (the jerk). What was originally a rescue mission for Briar, turns into a rescue mission for Aurora and the village. Great book, really! It was pretty thick, but I read it in just over 24 hours, 'cause I was pretty hooked... The only thing that really annoyed me though, was the language the characters used. It was all really teenafied, like an adult trying to be hip. Everything was OMG and way cool and I can't believe this. It made it shallow and the characters superficial. But overall, a great story. Rate:7.5/10 Favourite Part: "It might scar though, you have to prepare yourself for that" "Just like Harry Potter". |
