I Came to Say Goodbye
This book was NOT what I expected it to be. The blurb on the back describes the kidnapping of a baby and I thought that it would be similar to The Deep End of the Ocean, but it was not at all. In fact, what is described on the back does not even happen in the book until page 261- and there are only 295 pages in the book. I also thought that it was going to be a true story- it was a novel. I started reading it on Sunday night and finished it yesterday afternoon. I just kept wanting to get to the part in the blurb.
Instead of giving you a full blown account, I think I will create my own blurb that is a little less misleading... My name is Med Atley, short for Meredith, which, I know you are going to tell me is a girl's name. It's not, trust me, I'm not a girl. I thought growing up that I would have a simple life and enjoy it. But my life hasn't been so simple; it has been filled with love, abandonment, joy, loss and some of the most unspeakable horrors. This is the recount of the events; both big and small, leading up to the moments that changed my and my families lives forever. Not nearly as exciting as the blurb that they provide, but a little more realistic I feel. People would read my blurb and think, 'boring! not reading that!' and the truth is I wouldn't have read this book if I had read a more realistic blurb. Maybe then that's why they do it; pick the most exciting part of the book and emphasise on it. Perhaps I should be glad though; because I did enjoy this book. It is a tale of how horrendous and beautiful humanity can be and that one should never give up on family. Rate: 8/10 Recommended If: You like books that cover a lifetime and want to read a realistic interpretation of life Forster, Australia. |
